Creative Techniques: Downtime

Like it or not, creativity runs on a fuel tank. Life experience fills it, but if you stagnate, if you continualy do the same things day after day, I guarantee it will eventually run dry. Some people can operate creatively for years with little new input, but most of us need new experiences in order to operate creatively for any serious period of time.

Holidays are the perfect opportunity. The break from your usual routine is important, so don’t ignore it. If you have the chance, fill your tank with something different, something new. Travel, bungee jump, knit if you want to, but if you truly want to be creative, take every opportunity to do something you’ve never done before. Trust me, it will fill your tank faster than you can imagine.
